Tips for Sore Throat
The infection of sore throat is spread through airborne droplets, which are breathed in, or by physical contact, typically on the hands.
Sore throats can be caused by a bacteria or a virus. Of the bacteria that can cause this condition, the most common is streptococcus group A. Individuals with this type of sore throat can have swollen and coated tonsils, sour breath and feel very ill.
The trouble with sore throats is that each swallow is a painful reminder that you have a sore throat.
If you have a sore throat right now, think about your schedule. Chances are you've been pushing yourself like crazy, multitasking, running around, and sleeping a lot less than the recommended 8 hours a night.
If you take it easy, get lots of rest, flush your system by drinking nondairy liquids throughout the day, and stay away from heavy meals, the remedies we suggest will be much more effective.
Sore Throat Gargles and Drinks
When it comes to getting rid of a sore throat, this remedy is our first line of defense. Add 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar to 1 cup of warm water. Gargle a mouthful, spit it out, then swallow a mouthful. Gargle a mouthful, spit it out, then swallow a mouthful. (Notice a pattern forming here?) Keep this up until the liquid is all gone. An hour later, start all over.
Chances are you may not have to do it for more than a couple of hours. Yes, that's how quickly this remedy may work.
Steep 3 tea bags—black or green—in a cup of just- boiled water. Leave them there until the water is as dark as it can get. While the water is still quite hot but bearable, gargle with the tea. Do not swallow any of it. No one needs all that caffeine. Repeat every hour until you feel relief.
Next time you wake up with that sore throat feeling, add 1 teaspoon of sage to 1 cup of just-boiled water. Steep for 3 to 5 minutes and strain.
Gargle in the morning and at bedtime. It would be wise to swallow the sage tea while gargling, instead of spitting it out.
Syrups and Elixirs
Mix 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar with an equal amount of honey. Take 1 tablespoon six to eight times a day.
This elixir is particularly effective for a sore throat that's part of a cold.
External Sore Throat Treatments
Coarse (kosher) salt
Warm 1/2 cup of coarse (kosher) salt in a frying pan. Then carefully pour the warm salt into a large, clean white sock or handkerchief. If you use a handkerchief, fold it so that none of the salt can seep out. Wrap the salt-filled sock or hanky around your neck and wear it that way for an hour.
Chamomile tea
As soon as it cools enough for you to handle, soak a towel, preferably white, in the tea, wring it out, and apply it to the throat. As soon as it gets cold, reheat the tea, redip the towel, and reapply it.
The chamomile will help draw out the soreness; the heat will relax some of the tension built up in that area.
